Ryan Grush

Web Developer

I'm a Full-Stack Web Developer with 10+ years of practice in crafting beautiful user experiences. I started in UX and wireframes when I launched Noteswap as an undergrad at LSU. During that time I dabbled in design and eventually moved into HTML/CSS/JS for static mockups. For the past 6 years I've been working full-time freelancing and at startups like RadiumCRM and Autobrain and love the startup culture. I'm passionate about new technology, clean code, best practices, and better tools.

In my spare time I'm frequently hacking away on side projects and learning new skills as a developer. I'm also guilty of a slight sports addiction and enjoy comedy, tennis, music festivals, road trips, and was also chosen as the 2006 Time magazine's Person of the Year.

Web Developer – Autobrain

Jan 2016 - Current

Autobrain is a connected car app that allows parents to monitor teen drivers, owners to monitor their car fleet, etc. We're a Rails/ReactJS shop. I currently lead the frontend team by selecting new technologies and organizing our team's workflow. I am also project manager for the company's "admin" section where I do some code review and help onboard new hires.

Frontend Instructor – Tech Talent South

Oct 2015 - Jan 2017

I currently teach an 8-week frontend development course at the dev bootcamp school Tech Talent South. This requires lesson planning, creating sample homework websites, and lecturing on the basics of HTML/CSS/JS for 3 hours a week. Teaching has been a personal goal of mine for some time and I've been told I have a knack for breaking down material into an easy-to-understand format.

UX/UI Lead – Radium CRM

June 2012 - Nov 2015

I oversaw all UX/UI work for Radium, a CRM startup built as an Ember.js/Sinatra, SAAS, single-page app. I mostly worked on the frontend building Radium's web app, Chrome extension, Wordpress site and iPhone app (React). As UX/UI lead, I was heavily involved with every feature from concept to completion. New projects would include wireframes, high-fidelity mockups, development, and bug fixes. I was also involved with the business side of the startup researching and suggesting new ideas, blogging, marketing, head hunting, and sales.

Web Developer – Freelancer

Aug 2009 - Dec 2015

Most of my freelance work has come on the side for friends, family, and referrals. This frequently includes developing CMS-based sites such as Wordpress and Concrete5, but has also involved more exciting dynamic web apps and data visualization projects. I’ve also completed various other technical and artistic projects including illustrations, product brochures, flyers, email campaigns, data migration, and general troubleshooting.

CEO + Founder – Noteswap

Nov 2005 - Current

The bulk of my entrepreneurial experience came from founding Noteswap as a college sophomore. The site is an academic network for college students to share lecture notes and it has a strong grass roots following in Louisiana. I’ve developed it into a self-sustaining service that attracts 500k visitors, 5 million pageviews, 30k notes, and 15k users a year. It has been featured in 15+ publications and is the essential study tool for many. In addition to the UX/UI, design, and development skills I developed, I’ve also led the marketing, fund raising, business plan writing, legal structuring, presentations, public relations, budget making, project management, and human resources responsibilities for the startup.

LSU – Mass Communication, Advertising

Aug 2004 - Aug 2009

My time at LSU was amazing. I majored in Advertising, minored in Business, but it was my time away from the classroom that I'll remember the most. In addition to starting Noteswap, writing as a staff writer for the The Daily Reveille in the months after Katrina was a great experience. I also worked for the print center and was involved in various student organizations. I'd love to go back if I could!

Apps that are almost minimalist to a fault and extremely intuitive. Everything you need, nothing you don't.

Frontend Dev

Capable of any frontend work, stickler for clean code.

Backend Dev

Very much a "full-stack" developer. Proponent of getting the job done over pre-optimizing.

Strong eye for design and big fan of living style guides.

Business Dev

Has strong awareness of business goals and how UX/UI affects those goals.

Understands the network effect on a community and how to leverage SEO and social media.
